SIGNIFICANT DROP IN CRIME AGAINST WOMEN IN ARUNACHAL

Aadil Mir, ITANAGAR, Jun 6: While country is struggling with the rise in day to day crimes against women. Papum Pare District of Arunachal Pradesh has a different story to tell, as in this district crimes against women have dropped significantly in Papum Pare and Capital districts since the setting up of the first all-women police station here on June 1 last year.
First officer in-charge of the Police Station (PS) , inspector Chukhu Nanu Bui said that “Crime against women has dropped in the jurisdiction of the police station,” four days after completing a year. Charge sheets in 86 and final reports in 20 cases of the total 123 cases registered till date have been submitted, amounting to 70% cases solved
But there is a clear decline in reported cases, she said, quoting statistics. The cases from other districts are referred to respective PSs.
The cases ranged from domestic violence to kidnapping, murder, rape and cheating with the promise of marriage, harassment by husband etc basically under section 498 A IPC to other applicable sections and 302 IPC in case of murder, she said, referring to the recent Aroti Mize case, under investigation
She called upon young victims of such crimes to verify the background of person and seek the blessings of parents and guardians before establishing relation to avoid future complication.
Besides tackling crimes, the PS attends to calls over 22,92,130 round the clock, offers counseling to women in pain and seeks the help of Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Women, the Office In charge (OC) informed.
The performance of the maiden PS is appreciable despite lack of required strength and vehicles. The PS besides the OC has seven sub-inspectors, a sergeant and 36 constables, of whom 30 percent remain on leave. Only a lone old Gypsy is in running condition while the other one in garage while private vehicles are arranged to cover the vast area.
The PS, the first in the entire North East, set up at the initiative of Chief Minister Nabam Tuki, deserves ample attention before setting up of such PS in each district HQ as announced by the govt. of Arunachal Pradesh.
