Aadil Mir, ITANAGAR, Jun 6:National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamta Sharma today
called for combined efforts with an unalterable mission by all stakeholders for
empowerment of women and girl child in the state of Arunachal Pradesh.
Chairperson said that there must be broad-based consultation,
discussions, seminar for modifying our habitual laws. However, She expressed
her concern over frequency of child marriage, domestic violence etc.
“In order to have a comprehensive idea of the tribal customary
practices it is required to be documented,” adding Arunachal Pradesh has a
large number of tribes and sub-tribes with their own traditional laws.
NCW Chairperson further said that entitlement of rights of women
in inheritance of property is very important and also called for certain
statutory protection for women in various aspects.
While lauding the efforts of the APSCW, she informed that NCW has
recently set up a North East Cell in the Commission.
The NCW member Laldingliani Sailo expressed satisfaction to see
women participating in all sectors including decision making platform like
state legislative Assembly and Municipal Council. However, Sailo said “We must
do away with routine practices which stand in the way of women empowerment in
the society.”
APSCW Chairperson Gumri Ringu advocated for need for appointment
of gender experts. She further pointed out recommendation for review of
the AP Bill for Protection of Customary Laws and Social Practices 1994 saying
that “review of the Bill in tandem with need for protection against child
marriage/force marriage, polygamy, protection of right of women and children is
the key issues we need to work.”
Padmashree Mamang Dai, member APPSC, in her speech suggested “we
need to do serious thinking and examine very carefully whether we need to
codify our customary laws.”
